That technique was common until they came up with the innovative "freewheeling gearbox" when the Saab 96 went from a 3 speed to a 4 speed. They actually kept the freewheel for a few years even after going to 4 stroke powerplants. The technique Captain Slow showed helped preserve the 2 stroke motor but sure was tough on brakes!
