The Top Gear "obituary" makes more sense to me now... I liked how they did that "GM said, look at this Vauxhall Cavalier: change the bodywork + the badges... that's it" bit, but I wondered how factual that actually was (I mean, we all talk like GM did stuff like that, but it's one thing to joke about + another thing to put on air on TV + not get sued)... Lutz's biography basically confirms this stuff + is probably one of the sources of Top Gear's commentary. That there were 5 body styles in the works and we got the 9-3ss only says a lot... and iirc, there was still a Scandinavian design lead for the first generation of the 9-3ss, who was pushed out by GM... probably all related... (iirc, that guy overlapped Endvall in design, who overlapped Saxton, providing a direct link to the original Saabs... then we got a clean break with Lo + the German guy + the designs seemed disconnected)...
