ROFL - point is still valid. Ford brought in a guy from outside that everyone said was certain death, and Ford has been getting stronger and stronger ever since. Sad fact of the matter is that you don't need "car people" to run car companies. You need strong business people. GM's failure was never a failure to make "good cars" per se but in fact a total failure to make good products. You can only get away with shafting the consumer so long before people look elsewhere. But if you make good products you'll eventually earn lifetime customers.
Car guy or not, Lutz failed to fill GM's portfolio with good products. He did involve himself in good stuff, but clearly not enough. We'll never know whether that was his failure or simply the fact that he inherited a sinking ship. But, uh, comments he made that Swade quoted reinforce my position that he was the proud owner a false reputation. Too bad, really. Like Mulder, I wanted to believe.
