For 3D one needs 120MHz for today's 3D technology, as it shows different images to each eye... so essentially 2 60Hz TVs in one.
The other benefit of 120MHz, as pointed out, is for fast action 2D (action movies, sports, etc) to make sure the pixels fully update to keep up with the quick changes.
So 3D High fast action "needs" 240Mhz... but you are going to pay for it.
