I was lucky to come across this software two years ago when it was absolutely freeware for non-commercial use, but even after they changed their license into a bit more profit-oriented way it's still worth giving it a close attention. From 2010 on my solution has been jAlbum as the management layer and IIS (I'm more MS guy) as the host layer. If you've got a public IP address then you can even build your own public photo site (you can use different DDNS services in a case your public IP isn't static, but dynamic). Or you can by hosting on jAlbum's cloud.

I've got two albums... Well, actually, photo servers: one is local to which I add all my new photos to be able to later find them and another one (smaller one) is public to which I only add photos which I'd like to show to somebody (e.g. instead of sending them over email). You can check the public one at the link below (when you browse down to a photo in all those albums, move your mouse around the upper border to bring up the caption controls and try them all - it's worth it). I didn't do any customization to that default skin which it came with, but others do and report that it isn't something really complex.

jAlbum only requires Java so it doesn't really matter whenever you're PC guy or iGuy or Tux or Beastie. Or even a microkernel canuck.
The only drawback which I noticed is that the preview jpg is too much compressed, but it really shows it only in a very special photos with heavy color details like HDRi. Probably, there're some tweaks to twist this way or another, but I didn't dig it that deep.
Otherwise it's really good.
