besides mining carbonaceous fuel produced by the earth's interior heat caused by nuclear decay: the Thorium energy cycle. The thorium cycle is naturally unlikely to have catastrophic accident: it stops on its own. The reason why uranium cycle is used in all of the world's nuclear power plants is due to the political desire for weapons grade byproducts in the breeder process (most importantly, Plutonium, which due to its half life only exists as result of breeder operations yet accounts for the overwhelming majority of nuclear warheads in the world). The thorium cycle does not produce byproduct suitable for building nuclear weapons.

BTW, it's hard to say whether oil product is the most subsidized industry or the most heavily taxed industry in the world. The freely competitive market price for oil would be very very low indeed. Every government in the world however tries to gain itself a position in levying a heavy tax on the flow of oil. It's hard to argue any defense spending is there to protect the oil flow: as any oil producing country has to sell oil in order to pay for its own domestic programs and survive as an ongoing regime ruling that country. That's why OPEC members cheat all the time, and Iran even during the hostage crisis was trying to find ways to sell oil to the US even as its government held American embassy staff hostage.
