This is not just GM, but any manufacture of serviceable items. I work in the home appliance industry, and the length of time of parts availability, by virtually all manufactures domestic & foreign, is decreasing. This is driving replacement of product that is just several years old. It is even worse in electronics. While there is a lot of profit in aftermarket parts, there is a lot of cost in stocking parts, or keeping low demand parts in production, especially if it is low demand. How many people needing a ten year old speaker just live without it (I have a blown rear speaker in my 13 year old Saab & just listen to the front), or get a used one (how many of us buy rebuilt or salvaged parts), or get an aftermarket one. Plus the parts guys will generally get dinged by their management if there is a lot of unproductive inventory, but not dinged if parts are unavailable on a ten year old product that is way outside the manufacture’s warranty... So if it is a low demand part, its gone.
