Can't say that I agree with you on this one, having owned/leased five Audis over the past several decades, most of which had VW equivalents.
My latest big turnoff on VW/Audis: on my 2001 A6, VW/Audi did some "cost engineering" and replaced the former cast aluminum thermostat housing with one made from ABS plastic (first year for this "feature"). This July when it was over 100F, the plastic distorted and started leaking profusely. The thermostat housing is a strange setup and replacement requires removal of the timing belt, which is no small job and had been done last November (should have replaced this part then). I replaced it with a used aluminum part from a 1998 car - all is well until the next big job.
I'm now wondering what cost engineering has been done on the VW TDI cars that I'm particularly interested in.
