this weekend i got a wild hair and decided to start up the 1990 900. it had been sitting in the garage since we moved to this house (about 2.5 years) - in fact, i have recently been toying with the idea of selling it to make room...
battery was dead so i hooked up the charger overnight. first thing i noticed on sunday morning when i sat into the car was the smell. i don't know what it is, but there is something very distinct about the smell of the older 900s with the leather interior - just unique and it made me smile. when i turned the key, the car cranked and started right up.
it is a 90 900s, 5-speed, originally, but i replaced the stock engine with a turbo, new transmission from Scanwest about 5 yrs ago, replaced the stock ecu with a Wolf 3D 4.0 about 10 years ago, upgraded turbo, 3" exhaust all the way through, external waste gate, no cat, headwork and cams, bilsteins, jamex spring, super aero wheels, etc. i spent so much time and money on the car from when i bought it back in 1996 from a dealer in CT, moved to WA state, drove it to CA and then across country back to MA when we moved and used it as my daily driver all along the way. it has 245,000+ on the odometer, but much less than that on the engine and transmission. i gradually got the car to where i wanted it and it definitely became part of my identity.
well, when we moved into this house 2.5 years ago, i parked the car in the garage and gradually began piling things on top...i had already purchased a 2006 9-3 aero in 2007 and that became the daily driver (added the BSR stage 1 and loved it) so the 900 sat in the driveway at our old house until we moved.
so back to sunday, the car fired right up and the familiar rumbling idle from the exhaust and cams brought another smile to my face. I let the car warm up as I removed all the debris from on top of the car. Then I slowly backed out, rechecked the fluids and set off down the road. One note, the registration expired back in 2008 and the inspection sticker expired in 2007… I had no intention of doing anything with the car other than to convince myself that I did not want it any longer so I could finally break free and sell it. Well, that didn’t happen…running the winding roads, shifting through the gears, hearing the roar of the engine with the throttle down, I couldn’t help but smile all the way. When I got home, and was still smiling, my wife was not happy…she asked, “I guess you didn’t convince yourself to sell the car, huh?” “Nope” I responded – and the first thing I did was go online and re-register the car…
I must be crazy, but needless to say, I’ll probably be keeping it awhile longer…
