oil spray! Posted by Snowmobile [Email] (#686) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Snowmobile) on Thu, 27 Sep 2012 03:31:27 In Reply to: Rust never sleeps, JerseySaab [Profile/Gallery] , Wed, 26 Sep 2012 13:21:51 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
while I agree that the best thing to avoid rust is to keep them out of the salt completely, they last a lot longer if you oil spray them. Actually, it's worth doing even if you drive them only in summer... cars still rust, they just rust faster with salt.
I have 2 c900s and they're both pretty good. The winter beater has taken 2 decades of winters and is less rusty than your average 5 year old mazda... but it does have enough cosmetic rust to be relegated to winter beater status... the other one has been out of winter for a couple years now and has very little rust for a 20 year old car. both were annually oil sprayed (with various brands at various times) from when they were bought used (off-lease). On both of them, the rust issues are primarily occuring where there were lapses in oil spray applications (where the guy doing it missed a spot). Spray creeping oil in every cavity + they will last a long time! The original paint on the c900/9000 is tenacious stuff + highly protective, but it needs a little help.
I've had my 1993 parked next to another non-oil-sprayed but otherwise identical 1993 (destined tor the crusher) while I was cannibalizing it. under the hood, every surface of that car had peeling paint over surface rust, all the structural members, etc... mine looks new but oily. The contrast was amazing...
