At least he was doing something useful with it. It is amazing that the engine held up so long under that kind of use. Those large AMC V-8s were really hot stuff when they were new.
About 10 years ago I ran across an Acura forum web page with great pictures of the trail of engine pieces (they weren't parts anymore) that resulted from a guy mis-shifting his new car into 2nd while going 70 or 80. Engine probably hit 12k RPM.
