OT: Scary way to start the morning commute Posted by MI-Roger [Email] (#882) [Profile/Gallery] (more from MI-Roger) on Tue, 2 Oct 2012 03:40:58 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
5:00am, dark and rainy with no moonlight. I am two miles from home doing less than the indicated 45 MPH on a 5 lane road (2 lanes in each direction plus a center turn lane) equipped with marked bicycle lanes on each shoulder.
I am about to take the exit lane to enter the freeway when suddenly I see someting dangerously close in my lane ahead of me. I stomp the brakes and swing to the right sending my open briedcase crashing into the passenger footwell.
Some idiot is riding a bicycle in the left wheel path of the right hand lane!
Black pants, black jacket, no reflectors on the bicycle (rear or pedal strips), no blinking strobe. He is wearing an orange vest but it is one of the disposable variety with no reflective striping and it has crawled up his back so that from the rear it resembles more of a sports bra than a safety vest. I saw all this as I crept by on the entrance ramp approach.
Whew! I sure hope all other cars approaching him from behind also saw him in time to avoid a collision. I flashed my brights to help with illumination and warning for other drivers but I need to replace my left side high beam so that didn't work as well as I had hoped.
