A lot of people question my sanity because we drive a saab. and I've always enjoyed the out of ordinary. Some of my favorite phones were pieces of JUNK. (moto q, blackberry pear flip, etc) but they had character, and were interesting. Even when I had an iphone I replaced the front and rear glass to make it orange, just so it was different.
and if you've used webOS 2.2 and up, you would see that the operating system is a thing of beauty and simplicity. I admit that the original release of the the pre was lack luster. They put it on cheap hardware, that felt cheap. and all the other iterations (pre+, pre2, etc) were also not very good. Actually the best hardware was the pixi, but it had a stupid name, and could have stood a faster processor, and a higher resolution screen. If they had put it on better hardware to begin with and pushed for more app developers (make it easier to port apps from other platforms to theirs), I don't think palm would have gone under. in some ways the OS was a head of its time, and many of its multi tasking features have been emulated by its major competitors.
I also feel that if the touchpad had been released sooner, (to compete with the original ipad) as it was intended and the pre 3 was given an honest go, and the veer never even though of... That it would have really had a chance.
I keep up on it, and HP has made WebOS open source and there are a number of companies looking to release some hardware with the OS on it sometime late 2013. so just like saab, its still kicking around.
I know you think its a waste of time, I also read scifi books, play video games, and run cisco networking equipment (much to the chagrin of my wife) through my house. they are all hobbies, and hobbies are a waste of time. I'm not trying to impress anybody, just trying to enjoy something, and looking for somebody else who enjoys it as well.
