You can convert to HID in both. HID is the bulb - bulb power type.
I'm not familiar with post 2000 USA lighting regs vs european e-code, but in earlier years the big advantage to e-code was the much better [ in my opinion ] beam pattern. The biggest difference being the USA reg for lighting overhead highway signs, giving a 'light-up-the-sky' effect, where the e-code has a distinct top cut off with flare up to the RH on low beam and a corresponding lower long range high beam.
Here in the PNW with rainy and often foggy conditions I don't want the up light, but low on the road lighting.
I use e-code with 80-100w halogen bulbs.
I expect there are HID e-code lights for the later cars.
