OT: Repair advice for a gas hot water heater

My eight year old GE gas hot water heater won't heat the water. I can go through the manual start up of the pilot light, but the burner won't light and the pilot light won't stay on. I figure the thermocouple has failed and keeps cutting off the gas.
The part is only $10, but the firebox is secured with special screws and needs a gasket replaced with the repair, so I can't replace the thermocouple easily. Local plumber wants $125 just to come out and see it, that includes 1 hour labor which should be enough to replace the thermocouple. But the plumber is immediately talking total replacement as gas hot water heaters only last six years; funny, the first one was a cheaper model that lasted 15. The tank is not leaking and the unit was fine up to this point.
Is anyone familiar with GE gas hot water heaters and has done this repair or that can steer me to a source for repair parts and/or diagrams? I could not find any online.
Model is a 40 gallon 40,000 BTU model#PG40T09AVF00. Thanks in advance.
