I found the 50 gallon model on-line Posted by MI-Roger [Email] (#882) [Profile/Gallery] (more from MI-Roger) on Wed, 24 Oct 2012 07:32:52 In Reply to: OT: Repair advice for a gas hot water heater, andym, Wed, 24 Oct 2012 07:02:47 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Nothing matched the 40 gallon model number but the 50 gallon looks standard. I did not see any screws in the photos to access the burner / pilot / thermocouple. It appears to be the same type of cover installed on my AOSmith heater. Just firmly pinch the center bubble in the cover plate where the gas lines enter the fire box area from the valve. This will cause the cover to shorten slightly and the locking tabs on the ends of this cover will pop free from behind the out skin of the water heater.
Replacing a thermocouple is easy but frustrating too. The last one I replaced came with 10 to 12 tiny adapters and no instructions. I had to play with every possible comnbination of adapters to find the mix that placed the thermocouple in exactly the correct spot in the pilot flame.
I often see water heaters sitting by the curb wating for the white goods recycler. I always wonder how many are there because they needed only a $5 thermocouple.
