Electricity question (Sandy preparations)

Hey guys,
I'm near DC and am preparing for the arrival of Sandy. I have a spare 80 amp alternator from an old C900 that I "attached" to my riding lawnmower's mower deck pulley. I want to run a well pump off of the alternator in case power is out for days. I may also need to run a sump pump if this turns out to be like Agnes. Here is how things are wired:
7.4 amp Well pump ---> 2000 watt Inverter ---> 500 cranking amp Battery ---> 80 amp Saab Alternator
The battery, alternator, and inverter are wired in parallel. My concern is that when the well pump turns on, it will for that instant draw 14.4 amps (according to pump label). This is more watts than the alternator is rated for (~1700 watts vs ~1000 watts).
Will the battery shield the alternator from this current spike? Anything to worry about?
Thanks,
Rob 96 aero
