I helped a friend and her boyfriend swap the transmission on a similar year 4WD Pathfinder. The old Pathfinders are pretty simple underneath, and it's not a terribly difficult task but there is a TON of hardware and brackets and stuff down there! I think MI-Roger's 8 hour estimate is pretty close to accurate for someone who knows what they're doing. It probably took us 20 hours. Heh.
There are a few service points on the transmission that can be dealt with without actually removing the transmission. If it's not slipping and otherwise seems healthy, I would seek out a shop and get an opinion - it could be something as simple as a failed solenoid. Definitely get an opinion before you start pricing transmission swaps!
