I have a 2002 TDI Jetta since new. 5 spd. 345K to date. Been a great car. I drive 150 miles round trip per day. I bought the TDI solely for the commute. On its worst day it gets 44mpg....usually in the 46-47 range. Ive had no real issues. Needed a new tranny at 268K. 5th gear went. Rebuild guy said they fail around 200K. I wish I had bought a 5spd wagon, couldnt find one at the time.
Depends on year too. Check out myturbodiesl.com for tons of info on these cars. Years matter. Apparently, the best mpg are the 200-2003 or 04 cars.
They need attention to the throttle intake periodically...get clogged up, reduce power, etc. I put a VR6 clutch in mine when that came due. Get much more life than stock clutch.
