I spend a lot of time training indoors in support of a racing habit. Our winters are icy and the snow is too lousy to support my preferred cross-training (nordic skiing).
I have a Tacx 'virtual reality' trainer which (like Computrainers) has varying resistance, courses, visuals, etc. Useful for riding Milan San-Remo or Mont Ventoux in the darkest days of January :-). The caveat is expense and the tech aspects bother some users.
IMO the most cost effective indoor solution is what you have: A good fluid trainer (Kurt Kinetics are great), a big screen TV, and a computer. Pro race videos (Giro d'Italia, the Tour, Spring Classic races like Paris-Roubaix) are good stimulation, and can be purchased or Eurosport TV coverage downloaded these days.
Also check out "The SufferFest" for hard but entertaining workouts.
Regarding motivation: I find it helps to always have a workout plan (if not following a Sufferfest or Spinerval type video). Eg. 15" warmup, X number of intervals of specific duration and recovery, and then cool down. Just 'getting on and pedalling', even with pretty videos for entertainment, is the death knell for my motivation. With a good plan, I've done 4h trainer sessions. Without, I'm bored after 15 minutes. YMMV.
