I don't know why those cars intrigue me so much, maybe partly they were so advanced for their time, but I admittedly also have a thing for weird little cars.
In the late 1960s British Leyland had high hopes to grab some of VW's action here in the U.S. with the Austin America. Certainly the Austin was a much more technologically advanced car for the time (front drive, transverse engine, even a 4-speed automatic tranny available), but it lacked the reliability and durability of the VW Bug with its 1930s tech and was gone within a few years. VW Bugs are still a common sight but I have not seen an Austin America on the road for a very long time.
