Well not quite yet but I gave notice to my boss yesterday that I plan to leave effective April 1st. After backing off accumulated vacation my last work day will be around mid-February and I know my boss will need time to find my replacement, hence what may appear to be an early notice to others. Another reason is that in this day of businesses out-sourcing all non core activities it requires three months for the 1-800 HR Department to process the retirement papers!
The last five years have been extremely frustrating and stressful so I am glad to leave. Two major changes, i.e. reductions, in the pension plan within these last five years, coupled with the current all time low interest rates (which has temporarily sky rocketed the value of lump sum pension buy-outs) have convinced me that this is the time to close this chapter of my life after 38-1/2 years.
Although my soon to be former employer deserves pretty much all of the bad press they receive I can't be too angry at them. They paid for most of my Bachelors degree (Co-Op program), nearly all of my Masters Degree (Tuition Refund), they provided me with the work experiences and professional development that allowed me to receive my PE License on the first attempt as well as my NCEES Record, and most recently my OSHA 30 Hour Construction Safety Certificate.
My next two tasks are to secure a follow-up job for the final decade or so of my career (things are looking good on this front right now), and then to start developing a mental picture of myself post career. I have worked almost everyday of my life since I was 10 years old - I didn't even have summers off while in college due to the Co-Op program - and I know this future realization will be of utmost importance for my long term health and well being in 8 to 12 years.
To everyone looking forward to retirement I can assure you the final decision is a frightening one. Decades of saving and planning have put my wife and I in what should be a good place financially (even without another job), but it is definitely not the same aura of comfort and anticipation that I always assumed my Dad felt when he closed his lunch box for the last time. D-I-Y Pensions and D-I-Y Health Insurance in retirement are the new norm for everyone.
