You pay for the size of brick of goodies inside when it comes to universal catalytic converters. The bigger the brick, the more money.
The smaller the brick, the faster the cat kills itself in its work to clean exhaust fumes.
The smaller the brick, the bigger chances that it dies quickly due to fuel injection problems.
It's nothing magic about it.
A regular genuine catalytic converter probably have about 80-90% more brick inside than the cheapest universal weld in one. And it also have a better insulation cushion for vibrations and mechanical hits from road debris.
The cheap ones are popularly called 2 year cats here since you probably need a new one at next smog check.
