It's not so bad, even on your back in the driveway. The key, a least in my approach, is to align the whole thing, not a piece at a time.
I get the old system off then put the new parts on using new hangers but don't tighten the joints all the way. That let's you see how it looks and you can still move the joints to align the pieces where they connect. I use some exhaust cement on the joints to reduce the chance of leaks (pro shops do this), then tighten the joints about 85% starting at the cat and working back, adjusting the alignment as I go. Sometimes use a jack to get stuff in the right alignment. I do a final tightening with the engine running to kill any leaks. Seems to work pretty well. It's not hard, assuming you're doing the whole system at once, which is what I usually do.
Haven't done it on the '03 9-5 yet (the one with original exhaust) but my 9K needs one every 4 years and it's not bad. Takes a couple hours.
