If exhaust gasses are present in the coolant tank, your head gasket is leaking.
1. Did "small external leaks" cause the loss of coolant in the first place? If you do not fix the external leaks, you will have the same problem again.
2. Can the head and block be salvaged or are they warped too much? You will not know until the engine is taken apart.
3. Is there bearing damage from coolant mixing with engine oil?
While you are in there, replace thermostat and coolant tank cap.
Is your thermostat working OK? Like someone else suggested, if the thermostat is stuck closed all you may have to do is replace it (and the coolant tank cap for good measure) and try to make it to your destination and deal with it in a more relaxed setting.
You may want to contact Anders Johannesson of Swedecar and get his opinion, etc.
