Each manufacturer does it differently but they usually give dealers first choice on lease returns. I didn't buy many cars in that price range so don't know all the details. Independents run the gamut so there's no real rule of thumb. We specialized in European cars and went through great lengths to make them nice and did a lot of repeat business. I got cars from a wide variety of sources. There were a couple of new car dealers who I bought from regularly. I always paid top buck for prime European stuff, so they called me when they got them. Auctions were a mixed bag, but if you knew what to look for you could find some real gems. I always looked for cars in much the same vein as "Wheeler Dealers", cars that were a little run down but had good "bones", cars that I could make nice. Knowledge of given brands helped--I bought more than a couple of C900's that needed shifter bushings on the cheap from dealers who thought the tranny was bad. Some of my new car dealers would put together packages--three nice cars along with three crappy cars they wanted to get rid of(a part of the deal is you have to help them out sometimes). If it was a car I couldn't stand behind, I'd take it to the auction and dump it there.
