than those small time dealerships... maybe some of them are ok, but they have to make a profit, whereas sale by owner is often mostly about salvaging some value vs a trade in. There's about 3 right now in our immediate area with full service histories for sale by owner in the 120k ballpark and the $1.5-2.5k range and more slightly further afield... many have stick shift... 9-5 sedans and og9-3... nice wagons are a bit less easy to find...
that said, I bought our 2004 from a kind of sketchy small time dealership for a great price - they basically didn't know how to sell it I think because it sat and sat even though they dropped the price, but the car is in great shape. It was a 1 owner car traded in for a Hyundai (and the small dealer had a connection to get good deals on the trade-ins from the Hyundai dealer). That they could make a profit and I could buy for way less than average for sale by owner price indicates the huge ripoff margin of the trade-in system!
