Private owners can be pretty sleazy too. Since they're only looking to get rid of this one car with no interest in their reputation or repeat business you might be surprised what they'll try to pull. Private sellers often (or mostly) have totally unrealistic notions of what their car is worth based on what they need or simply want to get. They never guess on the low side. In addition they tend to take it all personally--how dare you make such a low offer on their baby. Dealers spend a great deal of time trying to figure out the true value of a car and they mostly do care about their reputation. Since they pay wholesale for cars, they can, if push comes to shove, sell it for a lot less than most owners would or could take for a given car. And they don't take it personally--it's just numbers. If you offer them enough over what they have in it, it's yours. This does of course assume you know how to handle yourself--if you're a lost little lamb your results may vary.
