I have a midnight blue with tan interior... it is a very nice combo. Only a few others I'd like as much or more (cosmic blue would be my #1, but merlot/tan combo is very nice also)...
Any dead 9-5 is worth about $1-1.5k as parts depending on condition. A running 2001 isn't worth a whole heck of a lot more than $2-2.5k, especially >200k (though <200k at this point probably means short trips, which increases the sludge risk)... these cars are dirt cheap used for what they are... this makes them awesome imho!
I think with the records, if I came across the minty $2.5k 9-5 you mention, if it had a good complete service history I was happy with (especially if that included a recent pan drop), it would be worth $300-500 more to me as a knowledgeable Saab enthusiast, depending what was done etc. Otherwise, I am budgeting immediately for a serp belt + pulleys, pan drop, etc etc... which costs way more than $300-500.
Whether records make much of a difference to Joe Blow ex-honda driver, I doubt it. Some of the sellers I spoke to (as I apologized while digging and pulling at stuff their cars) were relieved to have someone look at the car who understood it's qualities... they were having no luck selling to people just looking for 4 wheels... with a (mostly) dead brand, we're basically selling to enthusiasts now (and soon only buying from enthusiasts)... that's actually a good thing imho.
I don't know who buys all those $4500 high mileage 2000 lpts sitting on sketchy dealer lots (none of which have any history)... I guess someone who is looking at all cars on those lots and decides the seats are more comfy than the older honda next to it with the same price tag... and 6 months to a year of toyota owner style maintenance something goes wrong and they come on here saying "kias are better" or some such nonsense ;-)...
