I suppose I'm not trying to run down those small time car sales operations, but I wonder how much reputation matters when one operates from a shed/trailer on a parking lot that is leased to them only until a condo developer ponies up for the land... I'm talking about the "all brands" ones where the ownership and name changes semi-annually (if there even is a name)... I'm sure many are doing the best they can but they are bottom feeder operations and buying a saab there is often risky. Often the cars are high mileage bulk cast-offs from other dealers. I wonder how many go back to buy a second car there anyway? Buyers at those places are usually just scouring autotrader for a low price, no?
Otoh, there are small scale long lasting used car operations that sell to niche markets... eg there's one not too far from me that specializes in Saab, but carries many other european makes and is not interested in selling corrollas and mazdas at all, such that 95% of their stock is euro brands... for them, their name/reputation matters and the product usually reflects that (and can therefore price a little higher, etc).
You are right that a private seller can be sleazy also (I have run into a few of those also). Finding the right seller helps. There are lots of normal reasonable folk selling their cars. You are right that some can have an inflated idea of the valuation (for sentimental reasons?), but a rational discussion of this will either make them come around or the car will sit until they do! If they manage to sell it for their inflated value, then clearly the market was right, and their valuation wasn't inflated after all! I figure there's no point letting emotions get involved in this stuff... lots of cars out there, no need to rush, and if something is really unique, well, even less reason to rush... one might need basic transportation asap, but nobody *needs* a unique toy asap... if someone else is going to rush out to pay a higher price that I am, obviously I have the valuation problem (and for sure that has happened, and fair enough!).
I got our 9-5 for significantly less than the dealers' third time over discounted price - I basically explained to them why it wasn't selling, that this is what I was willing to pay, and as you said, it was a little more than they had in it, so they went with my offer to get the car off the lot. As you say, going in there with knowledge is critical...
