All any of us know is that he lied. But when did he lie? Was he lying all the times he said he was not doping and none of the testing agencies could prove otherwise? Or did he lie when he made the recent statement to Oprah that he had lied for years previously?
Assuming the first story, that he lied for years, also requires believing that he (and his team) were smarter than any of the world's drug testing services for years. This seems highly improbable unless they were culpable in a cover-up.
Assuming the second option - his current story - doesn't make a lot of sense either. His argument that coming clean now will allow him to compete again seems like an irrational reach. Why would anyone trust him?
But what if he is lying now, that he had told the truth for years, and that his current story is being spun only to burn all the members of the cycling community who have condemned and vilified him without objective evidence. Or to burn all the members of the cycling community who were knowledgeable regarding the entire scam and allowed him to be portrayed as the only villain.
The old saying that a person who is seeking revenge should dig two graves before starting their journey doesn't necessarily apply in this case. Lance's grave was already dug with no escape possible for him. Maybe he is simply trying to bury his foes at the same time using whatever means are available.
Either way I don't really care but it would make a good mystery novel.
