A neighbors friend drove his Leaf up our 110 ft' hill with 12+ percent grade in places. He was shocked by how much range the hill took out of the battery. Granted he would recover some by going back down the hill, but if you go up a river bluff, you can go a long way across the state before going down an equivalent hill. Also heard he doesn’t drive it when its near zero since the heater is weak, and the range shrinks to <15 miles real quick.
In the early 1900’s electric cars and trucks dominated. Once the convenience, cost, and range of gasoline powered cars proved themselves, electrics lost out. Ironically the electric starter put the finishing touch on electrics. Today the electric cars are in the same position, if it weren’t for the political push, regulations, and expenditures, the electrics would still be a historical moment.
Internal combustion has an inherent advantage, a good portion of its energy comes from chemical conversion of oxygen in the air. So far batteries have to contain all their energy internally. That is the reason for talk about air – zinc etc type batteries. Otherwise batteries are in a box, kick up their energy density and they become unstable and hard to manage. Because of that box, there are some new large rather expensive aircraft sitting around, think Boeing 787.
