That's really funny, I had a '77 Firebird Formula with the T/A 6.6 engine and 4-speed manual. I even added the WS6 wheels to it. Pontiac was really the only US company that tried to carry the performance banner through the 70s and I agree, it was a surprisingly quick car, and actually handled pretty well too. My brother had a '77 Trans Am black on black (no hood bird) with the 4-speed and WS6 wheels, and yes I'm still mad at him for selling it too.
The show was to get the least expensive car possible to hit 150mph, and I recently saw a fully restored '77 with an asking price over $30k, so I don't think the second gen cars would be a good choice in addition to not having the power stock. They had a ~95 LT1 (275hp) powered Trans Am, which I think cost them $2600 (compared to $3500 for the winning Viggen)
