Very neat.
It's not a new idea, though. There was an article in one of the major car mags about a guy who put solenoid-operated valves with a reasonably sophisticated programmable control system in his beetle some 40 years ago. It had a massively wide torque curve. One thing that has stuck with me about that setup is that it could be started up from a dead stop without having to slip the clutch.
No doubt that wire insulation technology has improved enough in the intervening years that a solenoids could operate longer under head temperatures than they could back then.
