Companies building own server farms Posted by MI-Roger [Email] (#882) [Profile/Gallery] (more from MI-Roger) on Fri, 15 Mar 2013 03:32:18 In Reply to: Re: Everything old is new again!, Simon S, Thu, 14 Mar 2013 20:54:08 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
My *former* employer went the route of leased server space for years. Then during the recession they discovered they not only did not have physical access to their data (if a server farm went bankrupt what happened to the data on the machines, and were the drives still spinning?), but they did not have exclusive rights to individual machines (i.e. the same server containing their data may also contain data and be routinely accessed by their chief competitors!).
Now they are building private server farms across the US just to maintain control of their proprietary data. Proximity to data intensive users, reliability of power grid, and local risk of natural disasters were all decision points for siting these facilities.
Where is this *cloud* that contians your personal data?
