It's the second point you make that differentiates cloud data storage from the paradigm of 40 years ago.
40 years ago, the central server was most likely owned by the same organization you were a member of. You most likely knew where it was, and quite possibly knew or were acquainted with the people that ran it.
Nowadays your data is stored in a number of undisclosed locations, on servers you don't know anything about, by people you don't know, who aren't accountable to the same people you are. IMHO not a very good situation if you actually care about your data!
Or as I put it to my manager: if we store our data in "the cloud" and one day you walk into my office and ask "where is our data stored", the only response I'll be able to provide is a blank stare. ;^)
