Heavier combination, more unsprung weight Posted by Bill Homer [Email] (#3427) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Bill Homer) on Mon, 1 Apr 2013 11:05:56 In Reply to: The car never leaves Florida, vvack0matic [Profile/Gallery] , Mon, 1 Apr 2013 10:33:37 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
If you didn't know this, aluminum alloy weighs more than rubber and the typical big-wheel/short-tire combination weighs more than its more conventional counterpart. With the new parts, your car will probably handle worse and will accelerate slower than with what you have now. Great that you think that you have smooth roads, but I will venture to say that one hot summer day you may be surprised by buckled pavement or other road hazard that has developed.
Last week I had the joy of avoiding a big hunk of delaminated tread that had just peeled off the rear tire of an SUV with what looked like 22s, then had to drive around a vehicle driven by a clueless driver riding on the rim - fortunately/unfortunately it was crowded so they weren't traveling too fast and the SUV didn't flip. Not the smartest idea in a climate like Chicago.
