So maybe renting is a good choice for you. One thing with the newer 9-3 is there is a bit less legroom in the back seat. One of the long vacation cars we rented was a mazda5 - did not like it at all (all the worst characteristics of a minivan + econobox imho)... but what doesn't work for someone can be excellent for someone else with different needs. The fuel economy was pretty good, but at the expense of driving experience (eg often needed to double downshift to pass, especially on a hill)...
Our trouble in part was we want to be able to haul bikes and surfboards, not just rectangular luggage. Some minivans and SUVs have roof rails (thereby enabling crossbars and bike racks to attach)... mazda5 did not. Though SUVs and minivans are large, they are not large enough to swallow bikes and boards with passengers. So for the mazda5, we had to leave some stuff at home and modify our plans at the last minute. not ideal...
We rented a minivan once for a 4 hour drive to move a large chair. It was a GM product and had adequate torque and power, but I damn near rolled the thing going around a clover leaf at the posted speed! POS. never again...
I wouldn't over think it too much. Have a great vacation!
