Hmmm.

The Saab would sure be more fun, and I don't think the mileage is a big deal. But suddenly needing a part in NoDak or Wyoming could be an issue, although at the mileage on your cars it's probably not a big concern, assuming you're up to date on maintenance. To limit worry, maybe do the serp belt and pulleys before you go if they aren't recent, flush the coolant and brake fluid, change the oil & filter, fix anything that needs it. Have your indy look the car over really well. Then the biggest worry is accidental damage. Which is worth a few thoughts, as it can leave you stranded.

The things is, for what you'll pay renting ain't bad. If you rent at a big rental depot, like at LAX, you will probably have a big choice of cars. Make the choice based on number of people and the amount of stuff you're hauling. You say "family" so that probably means kids. How do they do on long rides? No matter what age they are, being comfortable on hours-long daily drives and having room for assorted toys, snacks, etc., makes a big difference. I'd call AVIS and talk with them, see what you can arrange to make sure you get the best of their choices.

I wouldn't go for a full-size car. I'd get an SUV or minivan. These machines aren't great drivers' cars, but they are great for trips like this and not having to think about service is a nice thing. Your rental deal looks terrific and it seems too me to be a no brainer to it that way. You can take more stuff (or pack less carefully). Plus, if anything goes wrong with it or there's an accident, the rental car company has to bail you out. But still have a AAA Plus card in your pocket.

And enjoy the trip.
