The only thing with directionals is they have to point in the right direction, and then also if you have directional tires, they also have to point in the right direction (installer!)...
actually what drives me crazy are the new asymmetric tires with very directional looking treads that are actually "not directional" so it looks like 1 side of the car has the tires on backwards... If the tire's performance is unaffected by having a swooping water channel run "backwards", then why use a swooping shape at all? I can understand that manufacturers don't want to issue left and right tires (2 molds, stocking costs, installer complexity)... I can also understand the benefits of asymmetry across the tire width... but then either make the horizontal cuts fairly straight (eg michelin pss) or alternate direction (eg conti DWS) or something... they just look ridiculous imho!
