I hear you on that TDI wagon - went shopping for one over Memorial Day weekend and found only a couple for sale, couple year old models with very high (for the year) mileage being sold at prices just off new. Save $4000 and get a two year old car with 60,000 miles, no warranty, and used car financing rates? HA!
Another dramatically overvalued car around here is Subaru - they take a solid depreciation hit at first, but then they hold their value for a long, long time.
Of course, most used car values are a self-fulfilling prophecy. Dealers quote KBB at you, and KBB is based on dealer sales prices. Duh. As long as dealers hold firm on their price, KBB values stay high, and then dealers use those values to justify their prices to the consumer. Dealers are their own reference material!
Also, it should be noted that new car sales have STUNK over the last five or six years. '12 was the highest new car sales year since '07. Inventory on '08-'11 cars is relatively small, so all used cars are staying pretty expensive right now.
