The truck would work, but the fuel cost is nasty! Using a distance of 3300 miles and gas price of $3.75/gallon, the difference between driving a 9 MPG truck and a 30 MPG car is almost a thousand dollars. The cost of renting the vehicle itself is surprisingly similar - depending on exactly which car and truck you're comparing.
I don't know what MPG a van would get, but I'd hope for at least 15 in driving that's 99% highway. I actually saw someone advertising a van with a 6-cylinder turbodiesel engine that claimed it would get 35 MPG! That's probably optimistic, but 25 or 30 would be nice. No matter, though, it's not available for one-way rentals.
Also while it's not a Saab, a van is much more pleasant to drive and ride in than a box truck!
