The mixes for the base course and top course are slightly different. Also make sure they use a tack coat of liquid asphalt between courses, some yahoos will try to cut all the corners.
And get 4-inches or more, just because it is a residential drive doesn't mean you will never have a medium sized truck using it to deliver furniture or appliances to your home.
