I think it depends a lot on how much DIY Rod does... Posted by Snowmobile [Email] (#686) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Snowmobile) on Sat, 21 Sep 2013 05:30:19 In Reply to: Good point, No Snaab, Fri, 20 Sep 2013 15:25:52 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I easily can keep 3 saabs running (2 c900's and a 9-5) for less than a single car payment (waaay less!), even with some trips to our local saab indy. Insurance for all 3 is less than for 1 new car also (even not juggling summer/winter, which I do). The c900's (and I assume 9000 is similar in this regard) are very cheap to maintain now... the key is getting them sorted so little problems don't become big ones! That said, the c900's are old enough that I don't take them too far afield in case of disaster. So that's ok for a fun car, but not a family hauler. I suspect the 9000 is getting closer to that regime now... though around town, that hatch sure is handy. I'd love to own a 9000 beater to use as a pickup truck!
That said, if one is going to own multiple older cars, it makes sense to have fewer *different* models so that some parts are interchangeable. That's why I've (so far) stuck with 2 c900's rather than having one a 9000 or 9-3... and the winter beater replacement when it dies is most likely to be a 9-5 (so I can swap parts there in the future if need be)... even better if the cars are the same model year!
That's not for everyone though. Many would be happier with less work, less to think about, and a car payment for that luxury.
I also like saabsince93b's comment re replacing the 944 with an older 911. The 944 is a nice car but I think if I were to own a porsche, I'd want a 911. An old enough one would be simpler, and could be antique plated, though maintenance might not be trivial, it would almost certainly be more manageable than for a newer one (eg a 10 year old 911!)...
