When I used to travel for work, I was amazed by how poor most cable TV is and the incredible number of commercials shown - the original premise was "you're paying for a premium service so we will have less commercials" - that's long gone. Often, many of the commercials just extol how great the channel that you are currently watching is, especially CNN.

We raised our kid without cable TV. She is now a voracious reader (some correlation?) and knows how to cook - there were lots of cooking shows on PBS when she wanted to watch TV!

Over the air TV works well in Chicago, most stations broadcast in 720p High Definition. I bought a Roku box and now occasionally watch some Netflix shows on it, but still don't watch a lot of TV in general.
