Windows 8 represents the first really major change in the Windows user interface since Windows 95. In that time (nearly a generation), end-users have become very accustomed to working with the basic concepts of the desktop and the start menu, even with clicking on "Start" as the first step in system shutdown.
I remember the first time I had the Windows 8 beta test demonstrated to me by my hardware supplier. It took the guy literally five minutes to figure out how to shut the computer off when he was done. (He actually had to go look it up.)
I have no idea what super-genius decided that a user interface designed for cell phones and tablets would play well in a business environment consisting primarily of standard desktop PCs. Not to mention that in most business settings, end-users have generally learned to to operate their computers by rote and even a minor change in the routine leads to much wailing and gnashing of teeth.
I also dislike that out of the box, Windows 8 wants to make your PC a terminal on Microsoft's network (really tries to push you into using a Microsoft login) and is in your face with a bunch of animated crap when it fires up. Yes, you can bypass and disable most of this stuff but who wants to deal with it in the first place. Then we have secure boot which while having some value is implemented in a way so as to make it difficult to boot up an alternative operating system if desired. Possibly a first step on the way to Windows-only hardware.
In a word, I find Windows 8 to be obnoxious.
Microsoft is not alone in this, some major Linux desktop environments and distributions have also gone off the deep end with the "make everything look like a cell phone" paradigm. I changed from Gnome to Xfce desktop for this reason.
