I gotta laugh because they have these in certain cities in Colorado, Boulder being one of them and there are big warning signs before the intersection that you are approaching an intersection with these cameras - so what I find humorous is how many people still blow thru the red light and the cameras flash and they are nailed. To me it just shows you how many people are just out of touch while driving.
There is another intersection in Denver where these cameras are utilized to not only ticket red light violators but people were getting tickets for stopping in the crosswalk - this drew the ire of many.
But I am in support of both because I've seen way to many people who habitually and often dangerously blow thru a light change, and being a bike rider and occasional pedestrian I find it annoying how many people disregard crosswalks and just stop right over them, without any regards for people crossing the street.
So in CO you get a fine but I believe no points assessed to your license. And it's not a $500 fine.
