I'm sorry if I touched a nerve, I didn't mean to, and I also subscribe to the preventative maintenance and parts hoarding approaches to a significant extent - ie where it is reasonable to do so... that's why I suggested getting spares for common failure points. It would be ridiculous to buy spares of every part in the car or parts that were not going to leave you stranded (or cause you significant grief anyway). Not that many parts fail without warning, as you noticed with the ignition coils... that's what I meant by crossing that bridge when you come to it.
The bulk of my post was re engineering drawings (a topic with which I have experience): even if that exploded parts drawing is the same, the piece parts may have different specs. If you go and change out a saab-specific part with a GM part that is not suited for subtle aspects of the engine (eg turbocharged versions often have different spec'ed parts than NA's even if they both fit the hole: materials etc), you may cause yourself far more grief and expense, if not immediately, at some point in the future when it fails in an unanticipated way.
Otoh, sometimes an aftermarket part is better than the specified part, like you point out with the billet T instead of plastic. That's one of those things that needs to be evaluated based on experience and this bb is awesome for collecting that experience! More often than not though, an aftermarket part is sub-par (though cheaper)... eg on a 9-5, had I proactively replaced my Saab DIC with a brand new Chinese made DIC when I bought the car, I probably would have been stranded by now (whereas the original is still just fine)... Is it good to buy a spare DIC? yup! would I keep it in the trunk on a long trip in an isolated area like parts of the Rockies? you betcha! But I wouldn't eg proactively buy GM valves for a potential future engine failure on a currently good engine based on 2 exploded parts diagram pictures being similar.
Maybe more useful would be to compile a list on the 9-3bb of compatible GM parts for the 9-3. You are right that it could really save some $$!
