fix the rust! Posted by Snowmobile [Email] (#686) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Snowmobile) on Wed, 30 Oct 2013 07:46:44 In Reply to: Re: Preventative maintenance ---, peteski72, Tue, 29 Oct 2013 17:52:08 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Yeah, Jimmy's right. Ow40 religiously every 5k and drive it. Keep up on all the other fluids, plugs, belts, etc also. If you don't have a good Saab indy nearby, I'd keep a few spares on hand mainly to make it easier when something goes wrong (DIC, CPS, tstat, replace the biodegradeable vacuum hoses if you haven't yet, etc)... much more info on the 9-5 bb!
I'd add, put some effort into fixing that rust spot. Our 2004 had no evidence of rust there when we bought it <3 years ago. This fall there was a tiny bubble in the paint visible on one side and a 1 inch peeling patch on the other... I have not yet uploaded the pictures, but after removing both rear wheels, fender liners, sill trim, etc, I discovered a significant region of peeling paint and surface rust. It's a 3 dimensional surface, but though most of it was very minor surface rust, there was actually minor perforation (1/4" diameter) on the surface facing the wheel itself. I had to POR15 everything, then glass mesh over the thinned area and top coating. All my cars get oil spray annually but I haven't even had this one 3 years so the rust must have already set in underneath.
Lesson learned: The metal in the newer cars is much thinner than in the c900's and once it starts to go, it will go much faster! I have a 20 year old c900 that has seen double the winters of the 9-5 and has less rust. Very important to be proactive with this stuff!
I am not finding any of these cars very expensive to own/maintain. All 3 of mine combined cost less than a car payment, as does their insurance vs insurance for a new/leased car.
