but so what?! The only bad part is that someone less well prepared will try to break this record and cause a serious accident.
I always wanted to be in the original Cannonball crossings. Especially in the days of the 55 mpg speed limit these really had a point, even if it was just civil disobedience. I remember talking with Brock Yates about the runs on a race day at Lime Rock. Part of Yates' book, "Sunday Driver" recounts the story of his run with Gurney.
The hard part for keeping the speed up would be avoiding rush hours and east of the Mississippi where there is denser traffic, but he did that part at night, which would be easier. Once you hit Oklahoma or Kansas people seem to have the hammer down. 3 years ago we went across KS at 85+ and some people still passed us. Totally painless and easy to do.
He clearly went very fast in some places, but to average 98 with only a few stops, the normal speed would probably need to be about 120, which with some care isn't all that bad in a good car and with competent drivers.
